The air is crisp…
The sun hangs low in the sky…
The presence of the past watches over me.

On my neck stand on end
Reassuring me that I’m not alone.

p2210099Broken shards reveal themselves
As treasures; peices of the lives
That came before.

And gaze at the same features
That filled their days

Climb to safer ground and are
Hardened by countless use for the generations to come…

This race always kicks my ass. Not to make excuses, but it’s February and I really don’t ride my bike a whole lot this time of year. Our goal to drink a bunch of beer and ride our bikes a lot was achieved though. It’s also hard to take us jokers too seriously when we’re riding bikes most people would throw away, not to mention the wigs sorta got in the way.

It started out well with JP… ahem…I mean Slick Daddy, taking the first lap and the run start. He pulled a fast lap for not preriding the course. Mine…not so good. I derailed about a dozen times and my headset completely seized up and almost caused several crashes. I finally got the chain to stay on (duct tape is awesome) and the headset I kept working back and forth until it loosened up a bit. I finished my lap and Slick Daddy was out again. After many attempts at getting the Old Sorrento back into shape I gave up and started riding my boy Greg’s blinged out RIG. Way better, but I really missed the “boom box” from the other bike. Greg wasn’t so hip on me switching it to his bike so I rode it the way it was.

All was going well until I hit the wall around 2:30 am. Slick Daddy was out on his lap and I was fading fast. When he pulled into camp to get me I was babbling something about being cold and tired and that after my nap I’d go out again. Four hours later my nap was over and we managed three more laps before the finish. Had I gone out when I was supposed to we might have cracked the top 20. Oh well there’s always next year right?

I didn’t get many pictures of myself, but here’s one for the portfolio…

Most Fun Wins!

Most Fun Wins!

Unlike my boy Freako, we just plan on having a good time at the 24 this weekend…If we have a good showing, which I’m not really counting on, we might crack the top ten, but the idea for us is to go down to the dessert and ride ourselves silly. As always we’re riding our Klunker bikes and mostly to see how many beers we can drink between laps…There is a line-up change,  however, as my new friend JP is taking over for my longtime partner Dave Taylor who couldn’t make it this year. Our team name is “Pimpn’ Ain’t Easy.” I thought about “Hoe’s Gotta Eat Too!” but maybe we’ll save that for next year…It might be fun to challenge The Freako, but he’s gonna pull more laps than both of us put together…So I don’t want to provoke him too much. HaHa!

In Search of Drier Ground…

7 02 2009

Tried for a ride yesterday with JP, my Duo partner for 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. We went south towards Farmington, NM and checked out the Road Apple course. It looked completely dry and in great shape as we drove towards the trail head…Looks were deceiving… Although the air temperature was reaching 60 degrees, there was a layer of slime on the trail that had not dried out…We made it a few miles on the single track before we bailed out on an oil/gas access road…It turned out to be a good spin all in all. Not long or anything like that, just a good opportunity to hang with JP and get to know him a little better…This guy is a “nut job” and just my type of  “bro”…After the ride we went back to his pad and checked out the “Bike Barn”. Let’s just say JP  makes my bike obsession look normal…
